Did you ever have a moment in time, right after disaster stuck, where you wished like everything that you could just go back? A realization that everything would have been just fine if you had only made that one decision differently.
Yet, there you were, stuck in the present, powerless to change it. I think it’s safe to say that most of us have felt that way at various points in our lives….
Perhaps we’re always just one decision away from another disaster.
A man recently had something happen to his online business, something pretty devastating. I’m sure this must have been running through his mind for a long time afterwards.
Let me tell you what happened. It’s not a happy story, but it needs to be said. Hopefully you’ll be able to avoid this situation so it won’t happen to you.
I was reading a post in a forum recently. It was about how a man had recently lost something belonging to his clients which they had worked hard on for a long time…all of their websites. In a flash, everything was gone. All it took was an instant to wipe out all of their heartfelt, dedicated work.
Seriously.
All of the blog posts, media, tags, all their user’s comments, everything. Gone. Poof! Imagine loosing countless weeks, or even months of hard work.
The scary thing is that it seemed like he was safe before it happened. He had apparently taken all the right steps to ensure that this sort of thing would never happen, but nonetheless, happen it did.
I’m not going to give the name of the service he was using to host his client’s sites, because for one thing, they’re a really reputable company and I’d hate to cast them in a bad light. In fact, it’s the same company that I use, and I’ve never had a problem with them-they’ve always treated me fairly. Also, it turned out that the incident wasn’t actually their fault at all!
Unfortunately, sometimes things just fall though the cracks.
The gist of the story is that the hard drive on which all those sites were hosted had failed. You can maintain those things year after year, but eventually, time catches up. It’s just inevitable, and it’s going to happen at some point.
But, here’s the thing that’s nuts: They have a service where they back up your data onto a separate hard drive once a week…but the second HD also died! The hosting company had apparently told him (according to what he said) that there was nothing they could do about it.
But really, he should have backed everything up. It came back around to bite him in the end, unfortunately.
So, if you do what he did, and put all your trust into company to back up all your important data, even your websites which you count on for your income, than this kind of thing is bound to happen to you at some point. Word to the wise: keep your blogs backed up!
However, backing up a ton of user comments, posts, pages, settings, plugin configs, tags, affiliate links, and everything else could be a time consuming thing to do, so it might almost seem understandable to some that this man put his trust in this company to do it for him.
But…
If he was using WordPress, there’s a way he could have backed everything up with ease. In fact, after those HD’s failed, he could have been back in business within minutes. Most people don’t know that there’s actually a way you can “clone” a WordPress site. You can copy it verbatim, so that everything’s perfectly intact, with no need to go put the all the tiny pieces back together!
You might not believe me, but I’m about to prove it to you.
There’s an excellent piece of software which can actually copy an entire blog in under one minute. Watch this video for proof.
This nifty little invention is called WP Twin, and besides it’s ease of use, it’s also a huge time saver. With WP Twin, you no longer have to painstakingly go through and constantly make sure you’ve backed up each and every one of your blog’s features. This software takes care of it for you.
Check out this video of WP Twin in action!
Don’t leave all your hard work to chance. You can’t afford not to back everything up!
